Introduction

Rumors of Jigoku Tsuushin are quite common among the people of Japan. If you access the website at midnight and truly hate a person, Jigoku Shoujo will send that person to Hell for you. A young girl with long black hair and red eyes named Enma Ai is the Jigoku Shoujo. She has the ability to appear and reappear wherever needed, and is often observing humans involved in any case that she has. Wanyuudo, Ichimokuren and Hone Onna are her initial companions that are able to transform into straw dolls as well as various other things in order to torture people before Ai brings them to Hell. When she is not working, she returns home to a small house in the middle of an eternal sunset dimension to idle time until her next request.

Ai hardly shows any emotion. She has the perfect poker face and does not seem to be bothered by the workings of revenge upon first glance. However, the way she acts while at home and occasional displays of compassion for her clients may suggest there is something deeper at work than one may initially believe. Ai has a tragic past and a powerful hatred of her own that is buried deep in memories long forgotten.

Jigoku Shoujo    Enma Ai
Since the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1558-1600 approx), people have told stories of someone acting as an agent of hatred. They call her Jigoku Shoujo. She usually appears in a sailor uniform and during the time she ferries a target person to Hell, she wears a kimono. Her facial expression scarcely reveals emotion. She merely performs her assigned mission.

→ Ai is seven years old when she is sacrificed to the mountain god and eleven when she is killed.

→ She is often seen doing random things such as playing a flute, clipping her nails, playing with a beach ball or marbles, observing insects, etc. when she is at home waiting for another request.

→ Ai is destined to be replaced by Yuzuki as the Jigoku Shoujo, but accepts Yuzuki's punishment instead in order to remain as Jigoku Shoujo.

→ Ai believes that people are weak and will do anything to protect themselves. She sounds as if she has given up on humanity.

→ Ai has a book and a magazine article written about her by two people who know the truth that reveal her job and past to the world who would otherwise never know.

→ She is voiced by Mamiko Noto in the Japanese version and by Brina Palencia in the English version.
