Becoming Jigoku Shoujo

Ai's hatred for the village that demoralized her and her parents somehow allowed her to survive being buried alive. She makes her way back to the village during the night while everyone is asleep and sets it ablaze. Sentarou, who had decided to leave the village before she returned, saw the fire from a distance. He returns to find Ai walking through the village; everywhere she looked set on fire. Ai was bleeding from various places and was singing the song that they often sang together. Her blood-red eyes were completely glazed over like she wasn't actually there. In a daze, Ai walks through the entire village through the screams of the villagers being burned to death. Once she reaches a shrine that is also on fire, she falls to her knees and begins sobbing. Why did any of this have to happen? What did she do to deserve this fate?

Ai doesn't have much time to herself, as a voice suddenly asks her if she's satisfied. Ai looks up and sees a spider hanging from the shrine; three large eyes on it's back looking straight into her soul. The next thing she knows, she is plunged into water and sees the roots of a giant tree in front of her. Tangled in the roots are the souls of both of her parents. The voice of the spider continues and explains to her that opening her heart in order to release a hatred created yet another one. This is a heavy sin. Ai immediately defends herself by saying she did nothing wrong. The villagers were the ones who were wrong! She did nothing but live and they killed her family. Ignoring her self-defense, he continues by saying she is not allowed to go to Hell. She has to stay on Earth and bear the weight of her sins. If she refuses? The souls of her parents will be forced to wander in suffering for eternity. Ai remains silent.

After a strong wind blows, Ai finds herself on a shoreline in front of a boat. She is dressed in a black kimono with flowers that move on their own. From that moment on, she is Enma Ai--the Jigoku Shoujo.
